Prerequisites and Study Scores

What are prerequisites?

A prerequisite is a requirement of a tertiary course that you must have completed as part of your VCE program. You will notice that most courses have a prerequisite in order to be considered for the course – this is in addition to the ATAR score.

Unit 1 & 2 prerequisites

If a course specifies Units 1 & 2 of a study as a prerequisite, this means that a satisfactory result must have been awarded in both units.

Unit 3 & 4 prerequisites

If a course specifies Units 3 & 4 of a study as prerequisites, this means that a minimum VCE study score of 10 is required, with at least two graded assessments higher than UG. Some courses specify a higher study score.

It is also important to note that study scores listed for prerequisites are VCE Study Scores, not the VTAC Scaled ATAR Subject Scores.

For Example:
You may see the following on VTAC Course Search –

Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English

A statement like this means that before you are eligible to be selected for this course, you must have achieved a study score of at least 30 if you completed English (EAL) or a study score of at least 25 in any other English (English, English Language, Literature) at Units 3 & 4 level.

Where do I find prerequisites?

CourseSearch

Prerequisites are listed in all course descriptions on CourseSearch.

When you’re looking at a course description on CourseSearch, you’ll see that these criteria are different for Year 12 applicants and non-Year 12 applicants. If you’re currently in Year 12, or if you’ve completed Year 12 in the past and not yet done any further study above Certificate IV level, you’ll be considered a Year 12 applicant.

VTAC Course and prerequisite explorer

The VTAC Course and Prerequisite explorer provides additional search options for students in Years 10 to 12.

You can add VCE subjects and find courses that have these subjects as prerequisites. You can also refine your search by selecting an ATAR range.

If you are studying Year 12, you can find courses for which you meet the prerequisites by entering your current VCE studies.

If you are studying Year 10 or Year 11, you can find courses for which you meet the prerequisites by entering your plan for future VCE studies. You can try a few options to find the VCE program that provides you with the options you want. Please note: prerequisites for 2017 courses will be available late July.

  • Access to the Course and prerequisite explorer for 2017, 2018 and 2019 prerequisites is available here.
  • A PDF of the prerequisites for 2018 and 2019 is available from here.
