UniMelb – Doctor Pathway

I’ve recently had a lot of questions from students about how to become a doctor. I thought I would put together some information on how to become a doctor through the University of Melbourne.

Just keep in mind, this Pathway plan is for the University of Melbourne only – if you’re interested in other institutions, just let me know and I can draw up a plan.

If you are passionate about health, biosciences and caring for people, then a career in medicine is a great choice. Success in medicine requires you to have a thirst for life-long learning and be academically excellent.

To become a doctor:

Step 1
Choose an undergraduate degree including prerequisite studies in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry at second-year level (or equivalent)

Step 2
Choose the Doctor of Medicine to qualify as a doctor.

1st Step, Bachelors degree!

You’ll need to spend three years getting your bachelors degree first. To get into Medicine at Melbourne, you can complete the following courses:

Then complete the Doctor of Medicine

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Melbourne provides a fresh approach to medical training. The course delivers advanced clinical and academic training to ensure students are prepared for the challenges of medical internship.

Developed in consultation with doctors, students, consumers and leaders in health and medical education, the MD is designed to meet the current and future needs of students, patients and the changing health workforce.

Entry requirements
This program may have specific entry requirements such as prerequisite subjects, a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) or an entry test that must be completed to be considered for entry.

  • Grade Point Average of final three years (including Honours where applicable)
  • Multi Mini Interviews
  • GAMSAT Results
  • Any other entry requirements

Guaranteed entry
The University offers guaranteed entry into selected graduate degrees to domestic and international students who have completed an Australian Year 12 or the IB in Australia. Eligible students must enrol in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree immediately following year 12, or be granted a deferral by the University. These guarantees are usually based on your ATAR/notional ATAR.

Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship
Chancellor’s Scholars at Melbourne are guaranteed a place in the graduate program of their choice, and participate in a program of enrichment activities during their undergraduate studies.
